Nachricht aus dem LibanonKEREN HAYESOD - 14.07.2006 - Emergency
Summer Camps - Keeping Israel's Children in the North Safe
The security
situation in northern Israel has escalated dramatically. Hundreds of rockets
and missiles were fired on northern cities, including Haifa during the past 24
hours. Close to one and a half million citizens were rushed to bomb shelters.
There is no indication how long this untenable situation will
continue.
Keren Hayesod is calling upon World Jewry to take immediate
action to ensure the safety of the children in confrontation line communities
and take them out of the line of fire. An "emergency fundraising initiative"
is underway to establish summer camps for 2,000 children and youth living in
the North. The summer camps will be run for five weeks in Israel's central
region, primarily at Jewish Agency youth villages.
These summer camps will
offer the children five weeks of activities, including sports, swimming, music
and arts and crafts. It will give the children the opportunity to get away
from the tension and fear that is now permeating the north. It will also
greatly relieve parents' anxiety; knowing that their children are safely out
of the line of fire, and that they do not need to rush their children to the
hot, crowded bomb shelters whenever the warning is sounded.
The camps
will also assist many of the new immigrants from the former Soviet Union and
Ethiopia who are living in the North and have no idea how to cope with
emergency situations. The Cana'an Absorption Center in Tzfat, home to 3,000
new immigrants from Ethiopia, has already taken a direct missile hit. The
parents' overriding concern for their children will be alleviated by sending
them to the summer camps.
Says Greg Masel, Director General of Keren
Hayesod, "Within hours we need to help organize a network of summer camps for
2,000 children – a tremendous undertaking. We can only do this with the
support of World Jewry and our friends around the world."
$3.5 million is
needed to operate these summer camps, or $350 per child per week.
A
donation of $1,750 will give one child from the Northern confrontation line
the opportunity to participate in a five-week summer camp.
